ourSTEM is a new anti-racist, anti-misogynist, anti-transphobic, decolonial spaces for STEM students at UChicago. Our goals are:
-to provide a space for students that explores the potential of our STEM educations when they’re not just used for weapons, war, surveillance, or private capital,
-to provide academic and community support for students who are tired of the racist, misogynist, transphobic, ableist and colonial attitudes in STEM and assist as they reclaim their STEM educations
-to build capacity amongst STEM students to refuse to take part in careers and research that will contribute to mass violence or surveillance, and to use our STEM educations to imagine a collective anti-militarist future.
-to create a space on campus for imagining different collective futures where we can leverage our STEM education for liberation.
This project is led by students who love STEM and are refusing to be a part of the UChicago-military-industrial complex that has been pushing STEM students into innovating mass violence since its conception.
Currently, we run an anti-racist, anti-misogynst, anti-transphobic, anti-ableist ‘office hours’ /homework club where we (math, physics, CS< and sometimes bio upperclassmen) will be available to help with homework, or to talk about navigating STEM at UChicago or ethical STEM career resources. Or just come, bring your homework, and catch up on work with other cool STEM people!
